Change/Resize AWS ec2 instance types

This tutorial will explain, How to change/resize AWS EC2 Instance types for EBS Backed Instance ( The EC2 Instance that uses EBS Volume)

AWS EC2 Instance Types

Amazon provides a wide range of instance types optimized to fit different use cases. Instance types consists of varying combinations of CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity and give you the flexibility to choose the appropriate mix of resources for your applications. Each instance type includes one or more instance sizes, allowing you to scale your resources to the requirements of your target workload.

You can check the the EC2 Instance pricing and EC2 Instance hardware details of  EC2 Instance in AWS Pricing Calculator

Choose the Continue with  Simple Monthly Calculator , under  Compute: Amazon EC2 Instances: —-> Click on Add New Row—>   Add description  and Choose Instance type. Under Instance Type select the operating system , here you can also see the hardware details of the for any EC2 Instance Types.After selecting the Instance type you can see the pricing of the EC2 Instance under Monthly cost.By checking monthly cost you can decide to upgrade your EC2 Instance Type.

 

Recommendation : Before resizing, it is recommended to take snapshot of EBS Volume or Take the AMI Backup of Amazon EC2 Instance.

Resizing Ec2 Instance

Resizing EC2 Instance or Changing EC2 Instance types means upgrading or downgrading EC2 Instance hardware.

Please follow the following steps to Upgrading or downgrade your  AWS instance types.

Step 1 –  Login to your AWS account and navigate to Services—-> EC2 —-> Instances—-> Instances and select your EC2 Instance that you want to resize( Upgrade or downgrade).

Stop  the Instance

Click on Actions—-> Instance State ——-> Stop

 

Click on Yes, Stop  to confirm

Step 2 – Change Instance Type 

Once your  EC2 instance is stopped,  again click on Actions —-> Instance Settings ——-> Change Instance Type

 

Change the Instance Type . Here ,I am changing Instance type from t2.micro to t2.medium

After choosing Instance type , click on Apply

Step 3 – Start the EC2 Instance

Now Start the EC2 Instance

 

 

Click on Yes, Start to confirm

 

As soon as you click on Start, your instance will we resized.

Note : Your Public IP will be changed after stop and start instance if you are using Public IP instead of Elastic IP.
